Final Blog Post

So we are coming to the end of the school year and this means a lot to this class. There is the fact that it is almost over and that we are all completing our final exams and projects, getting ready for summer, but it also means something even more. For the past 15 weeks, I have been looking at this idea of college readiness and so with the completion of this school year, it also marks the completion to the adaptation or transition into college. At this point in my college career, I know that I have successfully transitioned into college. There were many different aspects that had to be done in order to get me to this point. I am going to try and summarize all of my research about college readiness from my research in the three mini projects and then attempt to create an alternative way of preparing students for college.

This was based around my research from looking at websites such as College Board, and looking at the studies of "College Readiness." There are many different companies who try to create different plans to prepare students for college; however, they do not work to help the student as much as to help themselves. They all base the information around helping them make money or look good as an organization. What I summarized from this point was that there was no "plan" that was able to help student be prepared for college. So this got me thinking, how do students prepare for college. My first thought was to write about my experiences transitioning into college; however, it all happened so fast, it was hard for me to remember what worked and what didn't. That is where I came up with the idea of interviewing a Senior in high school and a Sophomore in college. Here are the links to the interview if you would like to take a look at them again.

As this project is coming to its final part, I began to study what others are saying as well. I took a look at Ted Talks and listened to some very powerful speeches. One speech really stuck out to me and that was (Hrabowski). Look at the video around the eight minute mark and watch on. The speech is conducted by Mr. Hrabowski and he talks about the foundation of preparing yourself for the next part in your life. He says that school's have "weed-out" classes to get people who are not prepared for the next class, out of the program. This idea really made me thing. When I conducted my interview with the Senior in High School, I learned that there is no program that is going to get you prepared for college. Everyone handles change differently and because of that, there is no "(Insert Number Here) Step Process" that will help students be prepared for college. If you can create classes that can prepare students for the next level in life, why can you not create a class that will help student be prepared for college which is such a huge change in their life. Last time I checked, school was supposed to prepare us for the real world, no prepare us for a test. When we have such a huge change in our lives, school has failed us. School will prepare you for the next class, but why cant school help prepare you for life skills such as studing, living on your own and even coping with stress? Why cant school be a place where we can get answers that will make our lives easier. School acts as if doing something the easy way is wrong. Everything is supposed to have structure and everyone is supposed to learn the same way and in the mind of college readiness, that does not work. Some people will have no problem being dropped into a completely new situation and they will hit the group running, but for a lot of people, they will fall and have to work to get back up. Some people are not prepared for this metephorical drop becuase nobody told them what to expect. For the last part of this project, I am proposing an idea, something that will help students, something that will prepare students for the next part of their lives.

I found college to be a very difficult transition because of the classes and being on my own. I became homesick and that made it harder for me to figure out how to study. I feel that if the school system worked to prepare me in high school, my first-year college experience would have been very different. From the first ted talk (12:30 Minutes into Video), Mr. Hrabowski talks about how in college, you don't learn from just putting you face in a book and studding, you learn from hand on approaches and the interaction with others. This reminds me a lot about the study of HOMAGO (Ito) Learning from the beginning of the year. This also reminded me about "Geeking Out". When I was in high school, I was always told that technology was bad. You did not want to use technology becuase it would give you unreliable information and distract you from  learning "correctly". This made me think about how much we use technology here at UNCC and how successful it is. I feel that technology can be used in a very effective way, but only if the school promotes it as such. I thought about how we can learn in different ways other than studying from books. I have used this a lot in this class. A lot of my information has come from interviewing people and listening to public speakers. In high school that would have been unacceptable, but in college, that is perfectly fine.

By conducting these interviews, performing research, and looking at my own experiences in my transition into college, I have concluded that there are three different things that students need to adapt to. The first is living on your own for the first time in your life. The second is difference in class, teaching style and independent learning of college, and the third is becoming an adult. Like a said before, I feel that there is no way that someone can be completely prepared for college, but I feel that the school system can do more to prepare students. When students are seniors, they are already disengaging from high school with the anticipation for college. Commonly known as "Senioritous," this is the point when studies say, I'm finished with high school and now I just have to wait until I get to college. This is the perfect time to prepare students for college. The school system is set up so there is no transition. You finish high school and go to college, that's it. About half a year of high school is wasted when you disengage from school in preparation for college, so why not make that year a dedication for preparation. Set up a system where seniors take classes that are structured like college classes. This will help to get them prepared for the differences in teaching style, class schedule and the independence of learning. Steps one and two listed above work to get to fulfill steps three. So, by completing step two a year before step one, that will give seniors the head start to prepare them for the next year.

I feel that school systems should have a transition grade. This would not only help to get students to do better their first year, but it would also relieve some of the stress caused by the shock of such a new environment in their lives. Since the High School year is a count down the clock situation, i feel that this would be the best time to start preparing students becuase they can adapt in a stress free, no risk environment. In one last Ted Talk (Powell), Colin Powell talks about how to be successful. This was not in terms of school, but in life in general. He says that "Kids Need Structure". He says in order to be successful, you need to have the gift of a good start. To wrap up this "Rant" for lack of a better word, I want to say, Schools are supposed to prepare us for the next class; I feel that they should prepare us for the next part in our lives. This does not only includes class, but it also includes the transition in our lives. If we don't have that good start that Mr. Powell is talking about, it can be harder to succeed. So, give students that good start. Give them the tools they need to succeed an then maybe the dropout rate of college and the rate of major change will go down becuase students were prepared to be successful.

Mini Project 3

OK so this mini project did not go according to plan, I was talking to one of my friends who is still in High School and I was planning on interviewing him when I was back in Greensboro over the weekend. Everything was fine until I got to his house and pulled out my camera phone. He did not want to be filmed and i had no back up. So this is the interview in text form. Sorry it is not a video.


How did you prepare for college?
There are many things that I have been doing to try to prepare for college. The biggest thing I have been doing is watching YouTube videos and talking to my friends who have already graduated.
Do you feel that you are ready to move to college?
Honestly, I do not know if I am ready. Everyone that I know says they are ready to move of, but this is something that is new for me. I do not know how I am going to feel being away from home and living on my own. How can you be prepared for something like that? I feel that you have to just experience it.
What are some of the fears that you have moving to college?
There are many things that I am afraid of when I move to college. Being on my own and not having parental guidance kind of scares me. I have always been able to go to my parents and ask them questions, but i feel that it is going to be a lot harder when I am on my own.
What good things were portrayed about college?
I have seen in movies that everyone is relaxed and loves to chill out on the lawn and study between classes. This may sound stupid, but it is portrayed that you are finally free and able to do what ever you want in an environment where no one is going to judge.
What bad things were portrayed about college?
This also comes from movies, but college is portrayed to be full of alcohol, drugs, and partying. I am not a big party person, but it almost seems that if you do not do these things, you have not experienced the college experience.
Is there anything that you would like to add to the idea of college readiness?
I feel that there is no way to be ready for college. You can read and talk to people all day, but when it is all said and done, you will not know what college is for you because you are not the same as everyone else. You are going to experience college differently then everyone else.


There was a lot of information that i thought was interesting. If the first interview, it seemed that the high school student learned a lot about collage by using peer based learning; however, this student learned about college by using non traditional sources such as YouTube and movies. There are some things that were spot on, but at the same time, there was also some things that were not true. I thought it as very inter sting to see how this student used technology to benefit themselves and learn more about college. It is hard to say how someone is ready because everyone experiences college differently. This was one of the most important things i took away from this because it made me thing about all of the step programs online that will show you the steps to be "ready" for college. How are there supposed to be programs to get you ready for college? How can you generalize such a big move/change in someones life into a 5-8 step program. When you search college readiness plan into google, you are able to find many of these plans, but it appears that they only target preparing in the form of tangible things. There is nothing that works to help in preparing you for the emotional aspect. If there was a forth mini project, i would like to take this and study how to be emotionally prepared for college.

Mini Project 2

For the second and third part of my mini project, I want to look at the idea about how high school students view college readiness and then how college students view their transition into college. Below is a link to an interview I did with a Sophomore here at UNC Charlotte and I talked about what he used to tranisiton into college. Most of the interview was performed off camera; however, some of it was on camera. I am trying to use these mini projects to work towards making a huge project becuase ease piece is building off of the last. From what I got from talking to Nathan was that most of his college readiness came from talking to people who have already made the transition into college and their experiences. He felt that he had a pretty good handle on what college was and when he got here, the only thing he did not fully understand how the workload was going to be. It seems that what Nathan has used the most is peer based learning. He has talked to students who have already gone through these challenges in their lives and has choosed that they are the experts of the subject matter. There are many different people that he could have gone to talk to; however, he choose to talk to his peers. But anyways, check out the video and then we will see where this project goes from here. Next week i will be interviewing a senior in high school.

Meeting High Schoolars

So on Thursday for class, we met in the SAC with a few classes of high school students and we talked to them about college readiness. These are the same students who we wrote to for out midterm assignment. It was interesting to finally meet these kids and talk to them about high school. It is weird to think that was me last year. it feels like it has been so long and i have grown up so much since then. I feel like the information that i told them was very accurate and they asked a lot of questions about college. I saw how excited they were about college and how they want to experience the college life. I thought it was a really interesting and a different experience and one that i never would have thought that i would have in an English class.

Back to School

It definitely feels like it has been forever since I have written a blog post and I am unsure how to start this one. I guess ill start by saying that I had a great spring break and that it was needed. Midterm week killed me this semester, but i made it thought it and now i am on the final seven week home stretch.
When we got back into class, we were told to walk outside and look around for phrases that were up to around four words. These phrases were supposed to be something that was supposed to tell us some sort of information. We also talked about how we are going to take our midterm paper that we wrote to high school students and further elaborate that into something that will get us to where we are thinking the same way that lacy is. This project is going to last for the next few weeks and is going to work with a book that we are reading. I choose to read Enders Game because i read it in high school and really enjoyed the book. I feel that this book will be an accurate representation of what lacy is looking for in a students experience.

Midterm Week

Midterm week is coming up and everybody is starting to feel the crunch of a heavy workload. The library is going to start to get full and people will stay up longer and longer so they can do the best that they can before spring break. On the other note spring break is the next weekend and i could not be any more excited. I have some plans to go the beach which should be really fun. But anyway, in English, we are supposed to write a paper as part of out midterm project. We are supposed to write a narrative about school learning. this assignment is going to be due towards the end of the week; however, lacy wants us to have a start by the time class starts tomorrow. Honestly, i have not started mine yet which is bad considering its already 11:30. this blog is going to be one of my shorter ones so that i can hopefully finish all of my work before it get super late, but i am going to hopefully make some progress on this midterm project.

Pass the Picture

So this week in English we did this game called "Pass the Picture" (I don't remember the actual name). But anyways, this game is where we have a picture in front of us and we look at it and write something about it. It can be something we see/don't, what we feel is represented, or anything that is worth noting. Then after about 30 seconds, we pass off the picture to see what others say. We did this about 15 times and then we got our original picture back and were able to see what everyone else thought about our picture. There are many things that I think we can take out of this assignment not only in a real life situation, but in an English environment as well. In a real life situation, i can see this as being what others can think of you or the situation you are involved in. The way you carry yourself can play a big part in how others view you especially if they do not know you that well. It's a hard thing to view something when you have no idea what is going on a make your own assumptions about it; however, i feel that we do this all of the time. Not only do we do it, but we are usually wrong. Why do we judge and place labels? I don't know is that is because of how society is or what, but i think it is a bad quality that we have. Sorry i kinda got off topic there. But back to English. I am not really to sure where we were going with this assignment and I am not sure how this plays into the idea of learning with technology. This might be something that is completely new or maybe Lacy will tie it into a later lesson, but i think it will be interesting where she goes with this.

Blog Post Procrastination

Alright guys so I have come to the conclusion that I procrastinate with these blog posts. I don't know why I procrastinate so badly with these posts. Usually with everything else I do, I get it done way in advance. So I'm a little baffled, but anyways, this week, Lacy asked me if I wouldn't mind letting her use my blog as an example for how we are supposed to view this class and how we are supposed to reflect upon what we learned and apply it to our own lives. I usually write these posts knowing that worst case scenario, three to five people will see it, but now that may not be that case. I didn't mind letting her use it, but it is a weird feeling knowing that there is a possibility that people that have never met, or even seen me will be reading these posts. They will be looking into my mind and seeing what I think about and judging me based on things that I write on the website. But back to what lacy is doing with this class, she is teaching in a way that I have never experienced before because honestly how many times are we sitting in class and say, "How is this going to help me in real life." We go though life and always study for the test and never take the time to look back and see how the information that we learn can be applied to everyday life. I am only a second semester freshman, so I really don't have a strong grasp of college classes because I am still taking the pre major, high school/college, transitions classes; however, I feel that Lacy is trying to get us to think like a college student. It just a theory and I could be completely wrong, but the fact that she is trying to incorporate our everyday lives into this class is interesting.

As a side not from English, the basketball game on Saturday was crazy. There were so many Niners there who all came out to support a team that should have one that game. I got there at five so i could get the best seat possible and was sitting two rows from the court. Not Alan Major, but another one of our coaches was getting in the refs face after he didn't call that walk in the second half. It was pretty obvious that the game was not called evenly, but hopefully we can make up for it. Because of that last game, we went from #4 to #7. We play so much better when we have the support of the team because we are the "sixth player." So everyone grab your friends and get as many people as you can to come out to the game on February 24th against temple.

Another Blog


It was a long week and I had a lot of school work. Coming up this week, I have all of my first tests so I have been spending a lot of time studying. This week in class, we had our first experience with imporv. I feel that improve is kind of like "icebreakers". They are awkward and not everyone wants to do them. I think with some, they are fun and can be something that everyone would want to do; however, in a class environment, that isn't easy. Lacy is trying to show us different things that are going to get us out of our "comfort" zone in an attempt to learn in a different way. She is doing this i feel to make this class abstract. I am not really sure though. On a other note, I went to the UMASS game over the weekend and it was packed. It was awesome to see all of the fellow Niners come and support the team who brought us another victory. We are currently undefeated at home and ranked 2nd in our conference right behind VCU. It is going to be interesting to see how we do this year as the season starts to come to a close. Anyways, I hope everyone had a great weekend and ill see you in class on Monday.

Studying Peer Based Learning

For homework, Lacy had us choose what we wanted to read. There were three different options that we had to choose from. I choose to read about peer based learning which talked how it revolves around informal learning with friends. Parents look at peer based learning as something that is bad because  students get off topic and dont learn as much. This is interesting because students look at this as the complete opposite. Students feel that they are able to get more done because they are able to "bounce" ideas off of others and get a good amount of feedback. This idea of peer based learning exists in many different forms. One of which is social media. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, Myspace, or Instagram, there are many different ways that students can dive into this "peer based learning" idea. I'm sorry that it is upside down, I tried everything to get it to be rightside up and I couldn't figure it out.

A New Semester of Blogging

Winter break is over and everyone has come back to school relaxed and ready for a new semester. This semester is going to be a difficilt one for me. I am taking 18 credits over 7 classes. I am sure that I will be able to do it, but it is going to be difficult. Anyways, classes started this week and that meant that we started with the "interesting" approach to English 1102. For you all in my writing group that dont know, I had Lacy last semester for 1101. Her class was interesting and fun. It's hard to believe that an english class can be fun but the was that Lacy approaches it is very different. Last year she did imporv sessions almost every day and this allowed us to be silly and relax before class started. 

So this week we started out with playing these string games. They are something that i used to play when i was younger and completly forgot about. These string games allowed us to let are creativity show and make simple designs out of a single string. We also watch a "TED" speach that talked about how everyone can be a "Maker". I think this semester is going to be another great one and i am excited. 

A Little About Me
I figured since we are all going to be basically writing to each other for the next 16 weeks, i would tell you a little about myself. My name is Michael Shaw. I am currently studing to be an Electrical Engineer. I am a freshman (I think all of us are) and am looking to start a Co-Op next year. I have two pets, a dog named Marcello and a cat named prime time. In my spare time, I ompetitevely mountain bike, play drums, guitar, piano and I am a DJ.

I am excited to get to know you all this semester and I hope you enjoyed your long weekend. :)
